Private Label Share Across Vietnam Store Formats

What typical private-label penetration looks like across neighbourhood, mid-size, and larger supermarket formats in Vietnam.

Private-label penetration in Vietnam supermarket formats varies with floor plate, catchment income mix, and how long the operator has invested in pack quality. Neighbourhood stores often run a lighter private-label set focused on staples; mid-size formats stretch further into snacks and household; larger formats may carry deeper chilled private label where cold chain allows.

Treat peer figures as format-specific. Comparing a compact Tân Phú neighbourhood store to a large outer-district supermarket without adjusting for format will exaggerate “gaps” that are really differences in mission. Within a matched cohort, look at private-label share by category, not only as a store-wide percentage.

Quality perception still gates expansion. Operators who pushed private label too quickly into categories where pack and taste lagged branded alternatives often saw slower repeat rates. A measured step into staples where peers already show healthy share is usually safer than a wide launch across every aisle.

Our Peer Cohort Benchmarking packs report private-label share in bands so leadership can discuss ambition without exposing any single peer’s exact figures.
